"Please Consider Adopting
a Rescued Dog"
I cannot tell you the
wonderful feeling you get from doing rescue work. I worked for 10
years at a regional shelter, covering 4 towns within the state of
Connecticut. During this time I personally took in and kept four
dogs. My first was a Borzoi I named Rugby. He was a 6 month old,
pick of the litter pup, from a champion sired litter. I know this
because months after taking him home, I
found his breeder.
She was stunned that the gentleman, who was both a judge and former
Borzoi breeder, had never mentioned to her that he had lost her prize
puppy! She was more then happy that he had found a good home. My second
rescue was Abby. It took me 3 weeks of bringing him
food before he trusted me enough to come close so that I could put a
leash on him. He was approximately 6 years old, un-neutered and
heartworm positive. When rescue had no room for him, he came home
with me. Denver, my Boxer, was my third rescue. She had bitten a jogger,
and when her now divorced owner refused to claim her, I had two choices.
Euthanasia, or adopt her myself. She was a wonderful friend to my then 4
year old son Andrew and came with me on monthly nursing home visits.
She died a few years later from kidney failure. Darwin was my last
rescue. He was not a purebred, but a gorgeous Shepherd mix. He was
about 2 years old and had the sweetest disposition. He was totally
non-dog aggressive, which made him the perfect addition to my family!
During this time I also owned my second Bernese Mountain Dog, Sable.
Please consider giving a rescued dog, be it an Akita, or any breed, a
second chance. I can only say that it will give you a warm feeling
inside.
