Northbridge Bernese Mountain Dogs & Akitas

Formally Cobalt Akitas, we have gone through some big changes over the past few years, including adding a second breed to our family.  Andrew and I have been showing Akitas since 1998 and had finally found what we hoped would be our foundation bitch. Then in December of 2000 Rhythm went blind and was diagnosed with VKH.  We spent the next year taking care of her and getting her back to her old self before bringing in another puppy, only to have to send her back due to temperament issues.  We currently have a beautiful brindle bitch, Journey, waiting in the wings, but we have decided to give her the time she needs to mature before taking her back into the ring.

In June of 2004 I guess you could say I found my roots again by bringing Lexi into our family. My first show dog back in the 80’s was a Bernese Mountain Dog so this was not a new breed for me.  Andrew grew up with Sable by his side and I learned the ins and outs of showing. When I lost her to cancer it was devastating. It has taken much soul searching to bring another Berner into my life, but I love the breed, and once you own one, you will understand why I have taken this step again.  Andrew and I are looking forward to hitting the show ring with Lexi in 2005 and will hopefully have some nice photos of her as we make our way to the National Specialty in Gettysburg, PA in May.

Neither Akitas nor Bernese Mountain Dogs are the right breed for everyone.  If after researching these breeds and speaking to a number of breeders, you decide to include one in your household, please ask a lot of questions of your chosen breeder.  Ask about health clearances such as OFA, and CERF.  A good breeder will gladly send you copies of their dog’s health clearances.  Do not accept excuses as to why they have not been done!  Please also be understanding when the breeder asks you just as many questions.  A good breeder cares deeply for every puppy that they produce and they want to make sure they are the right breed for you too.

Families are our past, present and future……

This is true no matter if we are speaking of our human or our canine members.  Whether you choose to own an Akita, a Bernese Mountain Dog, or another breed,  please take the time to learn about your potential new puppy’s family tree and the breed itself. Knowledge can only help you in choosing a healthy, well socialized puppy from a reputable breeder.
